Getting from Mykonos to Aegina
Aegina is the closest of the Saronic islands to Athens and one of the most visited islands in Greece, though most of those visitors are Athenians escaping the city for the weekend rather than international tourists. It is a proper island with a real local character, a beautiful harbour town, the remarkably well-preserved Temple of Aphaia sitting on a pine-covered hill above the sea and pistachio groves that produce some of the finest pistachios in the world. The island is easy-going, affordable and far more representative of everyday Greek island life than most places that feature on the tourist circuit.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Mykonos to Aegina. The connection goes via Piraeus. Take the ferry from Mykonos to Piraeus, which takes around 2.5 to 5 hours depending on the vessel, and then connect onto one of the many Saronic ferries from Piraeus to Aegina. The Piraeus to Aegina crossing is one of the most frequent ferry routes in Greece with over 20 daily departures and a journey time of as little as 30 minutes to around 1.5 hours depending on the vessel and port. Total journey time from Mykonos is around 3 to 7 hours.
What about flying?
Aegina does not have an airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Flying from Mykonos to Athens and then taking the short Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina is the fastest overall approach, with total travel time around 2.5 to 3.5 hours. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.
Your best option
Fly to Athens and take the ferry from Piraeus. With over 20 daily crossings the Piraeus to Aegina ferry is one of the easiest connections in Greece and you rarely need to book in advance except on summer weekends when Athenians head out in large numbers. Give yourself at least a full day on Aegina, visit the Temple of Aphaia in the morning and pick up a bag of pistachios before you leave.
