About Giannis Kotsiras

Early Life

Giannis Kotsiras was born on October 5, 1969, in Athens. He began his career in 1990, singing rebetika and Laïka at the historic venue Perivoli t'Ouranou, giving him roots in traditional Greek folk performance well before his solo recording career began.

Musical Style & Sound

Kotsiras works across éntekhno, Laïko, and pop, known for interpreting major composed works alongside his own original material. His catalog spans both large-scale orchestral performances of significant Greek composers and more contemporary radio-oriented songs, giving him range across the more literary and the more commercial sides of Greek music.

Career Rise

His first personal album, "Athoos Enochos" (Innocent Guilty), was released in 1996. In 1998/99, he took part in Yiannis Markopoulos's concerts at the Athens Concert Hall, the Peace and Friendship Stadium, and in Patras. In May 2001, he performed as soloist in two major Mikis Theodorakis works, Angelos Sikelianos's "Spiritual March" and Odysseas Elytis's "Axion Esti," first at the Herodion and later in Thessaloniki and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, becoming the fifth and youngest interpreter of "Axion Esti." In April 2002, alongside Tania Tsanaklidou, he performed Theodorakis's "Epitaph" and "Romiosyni" in Cyprus with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Russia, a concert later repeated in Moscow, Athens, and Thessaloniki. His sixth album, "Wooden Horse" (2003), sold a record 50,000 copies within a month and went platinum instantly. In 2004, he released "Pass the Flame" in honor of the Athens Olympic Games, and in 2010 began a collaboration with Israeli-Spanish singer Yasmin Levy. In 2015, he composed theatrical music for the first time, for the production "Penelope Delta."

Diaspora Impact

Kotsiras's international performances of major Theodorakis works, including concerts in Moscow and Cyprus, along with his English-language Olympic single "Pass the Flame," have given him recognition beyond Greek-only audiences. His deep grounding in classical éntekhno repertoire makes him a particularly strong connection point for diaspora audiences drawn to Greek music's more literary and orchestral tradition, alongside listeners who follow his more contemporary Laïko and pop output.
