History
The vision for Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church of Naples, Florida began in the 1980s, when a small group of devoted faithful aspired to establish a spiritual home for Orthodox Christians in southwest Florida. The Naples area had grown dramatically through the postwar decades, and the Greek Orthodox faithful scattered across Collier County had no parish of their own. A major turning point came when a generous benefactor donated five acres of land on which the community's dream could take shape. On January 10, 1993, Archbishop Iakovos of America traveled to Naples to bless the grounds, marking the formal beginning of the journey toward a permanent church.
Fundraising gathered momentum through the 1990s, with 84 families pledging their support by 1998. Ground was officially broken on March 20, 1999, and construction proceeded with remarkable speed and dedication. On March 26, 2000, the parish's awe-inspiring dome was raised in a special ceremony, a milestone that gave the community a visible landmark on the Naples skyline. The dream became a reality on January 14, 2001, when Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church was formally consecrated in the presence of Archbishop Iakovos, Archbishop Demetrios, and Metropolitan Alexios, with members of Leadership 100 and the devoted parishioners who had made it all possible gathered to witness the culmination of more than a decade of sacrifice and faith.
The parish has grown steadily since its consecration, expanding from 300 to more than 430 families within just three years in its most recent period of growth. On March 3, 2024, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, alongside Metropolitans Alexios and Sevastianos, presided over the groundbreaking of an ambitious expansion project that includes a Youth and Community Education Building, a bell tower, and an outdoor covered pavilion, carrying the parish confidently into its next chapter.
