Getting from Aegina to Kavala

If you are heading to Kavala from Aegina you are making your way to a port city in northern Greece on the Macedonian coast. It has a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Kavala. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Lavrio to Kavala overnight ferry, which takes around 14 hours and runs a few times a week. Getting to Lavrio from Piraeus takes around 1 to 1.5 hours by road.

Getting there by air

Both Kavala and Athens have airports. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kavala takes around 1 hour 15 minutes in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours and is the most practical approach for most travellers.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Kavala. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and then drive northeast via the E75 motorway to Kavala, which takes around 6 to 7 hours from Athens. If you are planning to visit Thassos from Kavala, the ferry runs almost hourly in summer and the trip takes around 1 hour 20 minutes.
