Getting from Aegina to Kythnos

If you are heading to Kythnos from Aegina you are making your way to an island in the western Cyclades with over 60 beaches and a medieval village at Driopida that hardly anyone outside Greece knows about.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Kythnos. The most practical approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the ferry from Piraeus or Lavrio to Kythnos. From Lavrio the trip takes around 1 hour 10 minutes to 2.5 hours with up to 5 daily crossings in summer, making it the more convenient option. From Piraeus the trip takes around 3 hours with several weekly crossings. Lavrio is also around 35 kilometres from Athens Airport if you are connecting from there.

Getting there by air

Kythnos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and then travelling to Lavrio for the short ferry to Kythnos gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and then travel to Lavrio for the ferry to Kythnos. It is the most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, the ferry from Aegina already puts you at Piraeus with your vehicle, then drive to Lavrio and take the ferry across to Kythnos.
