Getting from Aegina to Lefkada

If you are heading to Lefkada from Aegina you are making your way to an island in the Ionian Sea connected to the mainland by a causeway, on the opposite side of Greece. It has some of the finest beaches in Europe on its west coast with sheer white limestone cliffs dropping to turquoise water.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry from Aegina to Lefkada. Lefkada has no main ferry connection to the mainland or Athens at all as it is linked to the mainland by a floating bridge. Getting there means taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then travelling by road northwest to Lefkada, which takes around 5 hours from Athens.

Getting there by air

Lefkada has no airport. The nearest airport is Preveza, around 20 kilometres from Lefkada Town, but it does not receive domestic flights from Athens. The most practical flying option is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and fly to Kefalonia, then take the local ferry from Fiscardo to Nidri in Lefkada, which takes around 2 hours. Total travel time via Kefalonia is around 5 to 6 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and drive northwest to Lefkada. The drive from Athens takes around 5 hours and having a car on the island gives you flexibility to explore the west coast beaches. The KTEL bus from Athens Kifissos terminal also runs directly to Lefkada taking around 5 hours and is a good option if you are not travelling with a car.
