Getting from Aegina to Patmos

If you are heading to Patmos from Aegina you are making your way to an island in the northern Dodecanese group. It is where John the Apostle wrote the Book of Revelation and the 11th century monastery of Saint John the Theologian above Chora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Patmos. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Patmos ferry, which runs up to 6 times a week and takes around 7 to 8 hours. It is a long total journey but a comfortable one on the larger vessels with cabins available.

Getting there by air

Patmos has no airport. The nearest airports are Leros and Kos. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Leros, followed by the ferry from Leros to Patmos taking around 1 hour, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours and is the most practical approach for most travellers.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, fly to Leros and take the short ferry across to Patmos. It is considerably faster than the full Piraeus to Patmos overnight ferry. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Patmos ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
