Getting from Mykonos to Dokos
Dokos is one of the few genuinely uninhabited islands in the Saronic Gulf and one of the most compelling precisely because of it. It sits between Hydra and the Peloponnese coast, a small rocky island of limestone cliffs and hidden coves with crystal clear water and absolute silence. There are no permanent residents, no hotels, no restaurants and no infrastructure of any kind. What it does have is some of the finest anchorages in the Saronic, a handful of beaches that feel completely untouched and an extraordinary piece of maritime history just offshore. The oldest known shipwreck in the world, dating back to around 2700 BC, was discovered here in 1975 in the waters off Skintos Bay. People who make it to Dokos tend not to talk about it too loudly.
Take the ferry
There are no scheduled ferries to Dokos at all. The island has no ferry service and no regular boat connection. The only way to reach it is by water taxi from Hydra, which takes around 30 minutes, or from Spetses or Ermioni on the Peloponnese coast. Some organised day tours from Hydra include Dokos as a swimming and snorkelling stop. The island is also a popular anchorage for sailing yachts and private boats cruising the Saronic Gulf.
What about flying?
Dokos has no airport and given that it is uninhabited this is unlikely to change. The nearest airport is Athens. To reach Dokos you would fly to Athens, take the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Hydra and then arrange a water taxi or day trip across to Dokos from Hydra. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.
Your best option
Use Hydra as your base. Take the ferry from Athens to Hydra and arrange a water taxi or join a day tour from the harbour. The crossing from Hydra to Dokos takes around 30 minutes. Come fully self-sufficient as there is nothing on the island. Bring water, food and everything you need for the day. If you want to stay overnight, a private boat or sailing charter is the only option. The island empties out in the late afternoon when the day trippers leave and that is when it is at its most extraordinary.
