Getting from Mykonos to Evia
Evia is the second largest island in Greece and one of the least known internationally despite sitting right next to the mainland. It stretches for nearly 180 kilometres along the eastern coast of central Greece and is connected to the mainland at Chalcis by a bridge so short you can cross it on foot, which gives it a character that is more peninsula than island. The landscape shifts dramatically as you move north and south, from the green forested mountains of the centre to the dramatic rocky coastline of the north and the quieter beaches and thermal springs of the south around Edipsos. It is an island that Greeks know well and international visitors rarely discover, which keeps it largely unspoilt.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Mykonos to Evia. Evia is connected to the mainland by several short ferry crossings from ports including Rafina to Marmari in the south, Arkitsa to Edipsos in the north and Agios Konstantinos to the central part of the island, as well as by the bridge at Chalcis. The most practical approach from Mykonos is to take the ferry to either Piraeus or Rafina and then travel by land to whichever part of Evia you are heading to.
What about flying?
Evia does not have a commercial airport. The nearest airport is Athens International Airport. Flying from Mykonos to Athens and then travelling by road to Evia is the fastest overall option. From Athens the bridge at Chalcis is around 80 kilometres and takes about an hour by car. If you are heading to the south of the island, the ferry from Rafina to Marmari takes around 1 hour and runs frequently.
Your best option
Fly or ferry to Athens and then travel by road to Evia. The bridge crossing into Chalcis is the simplest entry point and gives you access to the whole island. Rent a car once you are in Athens if you can, as Evia is large enough that having your own transport makes a real difference. Give yourself at least three or four days and get to both the north and south of the island as they feel like completely different places.
