Getting from Mykonos to Piraeus
Piraeus is Athens' main port and the largest passenger port in Europe. For most people arriving or departing by sea it is simply the beginning or end of their Greek island journey, but the area has more to it than a transit hub. The port district has been undergoing significant regeneration and the nearby neighbourhood of Mikrolimano, a small fishing harbour with seafood restaurants lining the waterfront, is one of the more enjoyable places to eat in the wider Athens area. The port is also 10 kilometres from the city centre and connected directly to Athens by Metro, which makes it one of the most convenient arrival points in Greece.
Take the ferry
There is a direct ferry between Mykonos and Piraeus year round with up to 5 daily crossings in the summer season. Seajets and Blue Star Ferries both operate on this route. The fastest crossing takes around 2 hours 40 minutes on a high speed vessel while conventional ferries take closer to 5 to 6 hours. Tickets start from around €53. Book ahead in July and August as this is one of the most popular ferry routes in Greece and sailings fill up fast.
What about flying?
Mykonos has an airport and Athens International Airport is around 35 kilometres from Piraeus, so flying is an option. The flight from Mykonos to Athens takes under an hour but by the time you add airport time and the journey from the airport to Piraeus, the fast ferry is comparable in total travel time and considerably more straightforward. Most people heading to Piraeus from Mykonos take the ferry.
Your best option
Take the ferry. It is direct, frequent and on a high speed vessel gets you there in under 3 hours. If you are heading into central Athens from Piraeus the Metro connects the port to Syntagma Square in around 25 minutes and runs frequently throughout the day.
