Getting from Rhodes to Kythira

If you are heading to Kythira from Rhodes you are making your way to an island at the southern tip of the Peloponnese, between the Aegean and the Ionian seas. It has stone villages, deep gorges and a coastline of turquoise coves.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Rhodes to Kythira. The island is connected to Piraeus by ferry several times a week, with the trip taking around 6 to 6.5 hours. Getting to Piraeus from Rhodes means taking the overnight ferry, making the total journey by sea the better part of two days. Flying is the more practical option for most travellers.

Getting there by air

Kythira has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Rhodes to Athens takes around 1 hour and then Athens to Kythira takes around 50 minutes. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Fly to Kythira via Athens. It is the most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, the overnight ferry from Rhodes to Piraeus is the practical choice, then drive south to Neapoli and take the short ferry across to Kythira, which takes around 1 hour.
