About the Beach
Episkopi Beach is a truly massive and wide sandy beach on the north coast of Crete that is so long you could walk for almost an hour and still not reach the end of it. Because it is so open and large, it is a very important place where the big Caretta-Caretta sea turtles come out of the ocean at night to hide their eggs in the warm sand, so you will often see small wooden cages that keep the nests safe from people. The water here is a bright blue color and stays quite shallow, but since it faces the north, the wind can sometimes make some really big and fun waves that are perfect for jumping and splashing around with your friends. There are plenty of cool places to eat and get a snack right on the beach, but because it is so big, you can always find a quiet spot far away from everyone else to enjoy the sound of the ocean and look out at the huge mountains in the distance while you soak up the sun.
