About the Beach
Skaleta Beach is a very long and wide beach made of sand and small pebbles that marks the very end of the huge coastline that starts near the city of Rethymno and goes on for miles along the northern side of the island. It is a very popular spot because there are many big hotels nearby with fun pools and playgrounds, but the beach itself is so large that you can always find a lot of space to run around or build a giant sandcastle with your friends. During the summer months, this is one of the important places where the Caretta-Caretta sea turtles come out of the ocean at night to hide their eggs in the warm sand, so you will see little wooden frames helping to keep the nests safe from people walking by. The water can have some fun waves when the wind blows from the north, making it a great place to splash around and enjoy the big open view of the Cretan Sea while you soak up the sun and enjoy the fresh air.
