Getting from Aegina to Antikythera

If you are heading to Antikythera from Aegina you are making your way to one of the most isolated islands in Greece, sitting in the strait between Kythira and Crete. It is known to the world for the Antikythera Mechanism, a 2,000-year-old bronze analog computer considered the most sophisticated device to survive from antiquity.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Antikythera. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Antikythera ferry, which takes around 8 hours 25 minutes and runs a few times per week. Check the schedule carefully as the frequency is limited and your travel dates need to align with the departure days.

Getting there by air

Antikythera has no airport, only a helipad. The nearest airports are Kythira and Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kythira, followed by the ferry from Kythira to Antikythera taking around 1 hour 30 minutes, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Kythira, then take the ferry across to Antikythera. It is faster than the long Piraeus direct ferry. If you are travelling with a car, the Piraeus to Antikythera ferry is the practical choice as it keeps your vehicle with you. Bring everything you need as the island has almost no facilities.
