Getting from Aegina to Santorini

If you are heading to Santorini from Aegina you are making your way to the most iconic island in Greece, with caldera views, volcanic beaches and the ancient Minoan site of Akrotiri preserved under volcanic ash.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Santorini. The most practical approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Santorini ferry. Fast catamarans take around 5 to 6 hours and conventional ferries take around 7 to 9 hours, with up to 9 daily departures in summer. Total journey time from Aegina is around 6 to 10 hours depending on the vessel. Book well ahead in July and August as this is one of the most heavily booked routes in the Aegean.

Getting there by air

Santorini has an international airport with daily connections from Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Santorini takes around 45 to 55 minutes in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Santorini if time matters. If you want the experience of arriving by sea into the caldera, take the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and board the overnight Blue Star conventional ferry, which is comfortable and arrives in Santorini in the morning. If you are travelling with a car, the conventional ferry from Piraeus takes your vehicle directly to Athinios port.
