History
Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Marietta, Georgia took root in the late 1980s as the northwestern suburbs of Atlanta grew rapidly and more and more Orthodox parishioners found it increasingly difficult to make the journey to the Annunciation Cathedral in Atlanta for their spiritual and social needs. As the city of Marietta swelled past 60,000 residents and Greek and Greek-American families settled across Cobb County, a group of determined parishioners began working toward a parish of their own.
The first organizational meeting took place on November 28, 1988 at a bank building, where the Northwest Metro Atlanta Hellenic Association was established and its first officers elected. The Association organized the first church services during Holy Week, April 23 to 29, 1989, at Saint James Episcopal Church in Marietta. Fifty families pledged their support to the project, and on Sunday, August 6, 1989, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, the group celebrated its first Divine Liturgy under the name Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Marietta at the Ray Thomas Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sandy Plains Road. The feast day of the patron had been chosen with care, and it has defined the parish's identity ever since.
From those beginnings the parish grew steadily into one of the most active communities in the Metropolis of Atlanta, building an extensive youth ministry including one of the largest Greek dance programs in the Metropolis, robust Sunday School and adult education programs, Greek School, and multiple charitable and outreach initiatives. The annual Marietta Greek Festival has become one of the most beloved Hellenic cultural celebrations in the greater Atlanta area, drawing thousands each year to Cobb County for Greek food, music, and dance. True to the founding vision, the revenue from the festival is directed not to parish operations but to charitable organizations and causes in the greater Marietta community.
