Getting from Naxos to Crete

If you are heading to Crete from Naxos you are making your way to the largest island in Greece, to the south. It has ancient Minoan sites, mountain gorges, excellent food and a coastline that stretches for hundreds of kilometres.

Take the ferry

There is a direct seasonal ferry from Naxos to Heraklion running in summer, taking around 3 to 4 hours. The route is not year-round so check the schedule before planning around it. Outside of the summer season the connection goes via Piraeus or Santorini. Book ahead in July and August.

Getting there by air

Both Naxos and Crete have airports. Flying from Naxos to Athens takes around 45 minutes and then Athens to Heraklion or Chania takes around 50 minutes. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the direct summer ferry from Naxos to Heraklion when it is running. It is the most practical and enjoyable approach and avoids going through Athens entirely. If the direct service is not available for your dates, fly via Athens to whichever Crete airport is closest to your destination on the island. If you are travelling with a car, the direct summer ferry is the practical choice.
