Getting from Rhodes to Heraklion

If you are heading to Heraklion from Rhodes you are making your way to the capital of Crete, to the southwest. It has one of the finest archaeological museums in Greece and the Palace of Knossos just 5 kilometres from the city centre.

Take the ferry

There is a direct overnight ferry from Rhodes to Heraklion running year-round, taking around 9 to 12 hours. It is a comfortable crossing on the larger vessels with cabins available and you arrive in Heraklion in the morning ready to go. Book ahead in July and August.

Getting there by air

Both Rhodes and Heraklion have airports. A direct seasonal flight between the two may be available so check before routing through Athens. Flying from Rhodes to Athens takes around 1 hour and then Athens to Heraklion takes around 50 minutes. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights on most routes.

Your best option

Check whether the direct Rhodes to Heraklion flight is available for your dates. If it is, take it. If not, the overnight ferry is a comfortable option and you arrive in Heraklion in the morning. If you are travelling with a car, the overnight ferry is the practical choice as it keeps your vehicle with you throughout the journey.
