Getting from Rhodes to Kythnos

If you are heading to Kythnos from Rhodes you are making your way to an island in the western Cyclades, to the northwest. It has over 60 beaches and a medieval village at Driopida that hardly anyone outside Greece knows about.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Rhodes to Kythnos. Getting there means taking the overnight ferry from Rhodes to Piraeus and then connecting onto the Kythnos service from Piraeus or Lavrio, with the crossing taking around 1 hour 10 minutes from Lavrio or 1 hour 40 minutes from Piraeus on the fast boat.

Getting there by air

Kythnos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Flying from Rhodes to Athens takes around 1 hour and then a taxi or bus to Lavrio takes around 30 to 40 minutes from the airport, followed by the short ferry to Kythnos taking around 1 hour 10 minutes. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Fly to Athens and take the ferry from Lavrio to Kythnos. The proximity of Lavrio to Athens Airport makes it a straightforward connection without crossing the city to Piraeus. If you are travelling with a car, the overnight ferry from Rhodes to Piraeus is the practical choice, then take the ferry from Piraeus or Lavrio to Kythnos.
