About the Beach
Paliorema is a unique and very atmospheric beach on the eastern coast of Milos, located at the site of the island's abandoned 19th-century sulfur mines. The ruins of the mining facilities, including stone buildings, rusty rails, and elevators, still stand right on the shore, providing a very dramatic and historic backdrop. The beach is small with pebbles and sand that are colored in vivid shades of red, yellow, and orange due to the sulfur, while the water is a deep and crystal-clear blue. Access is via a difficult dirt road followed by a walk down a steep path, which ensures it remains a quiet and secluded spot. It is a completely unorganized destination where visitors can explore the industrial ruins and enjoy a peaceful swim in a setting that feels frozen in time. The sense of history and the unusual colors of the landscape make it one of the most memorable locations on the island.
